Married to the Water 2020

There are two things I’m very passionate about: being active and photography.

One of the ways I enjoy being active is kayaking out on the water. When I’m not doing that, or a myriad of other outdoor activities, I’m a professional photographer. I enjoy capturing weddings, families, newborns, and special occasions.

This pandemic has caused me to pause my photography business, indefinitely. That’s hard to comprehend some days. You don’t simply ‘turn off’ a passion until a later date. Creative types always need to be creating. It’s what fuels us and pushes us to be better. But more than that - creativity is a vehicle through which we connect with communities of people.

Thankfully, right now I have the ability to get out on the water. And when I go kayaking, the camera goes with me. I mean, my camera goes almost everywhere with me regardless of what I’m doing. But I also take it with me in my kayak. This is one of the ways I have been able to continue creating.

I was out for a drive one day when I had this goofy idea. I missed photographing weddings, especially those precious moments when the bride and groom are separately getting ready on the big day. Something about that thought snowballed into what that would look like for someone getting ready to go paddling.

I could envision it. The tricky part was being both the photographer and the model. Normally I would not opt to be in front of the camera…see previous point about pushing ourselves creatively.

But since I like a challenge, I was up for the task! Let me tell you, it was a lot of fun and it provided me with a good laugh.

Here’s to finding creative ways to pursue our passions during a pandemic!
